Sandy Ettinger

Norfolk, Connecticut
Company Member since 2022

Sandy grew up in Norfolk, CT, known as "the Icebox of Connecticut" for being the highest-elevation and snowiest town in the state. She started tap lessons around ages 6-7. Once, she performed with a boy named George who stopped dancing mid-performance, but Sandy kept going and finished solo! At 17, she moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University. There, she studied tap dance with Stanley E. Brown, who worked with legends like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Charles "Honi" Coles. Brown taught many famous personalities, including Jimmy Slyde, "Sugar Ray" Robinson, Cab Calloway, and Diana Ross. Sandy initially majored in education but switched paths when it came time for student teaching and moved to New York City. She spent seven years in consumer market research as a client service trainee, eventually advancing to roles such as junior project director, senior project director, and vice president. She also worked at various companies and agencies, including a brief stint at a think tank in Cambridge, MA, focused on government-funded social and economic research. Her last NYC position was with Marketing Information Systems International.

In 1998, Sandy moved to Wilmington to be near her sister and mother. She earned a real estate license and worked at H&R Block on Carolina Beach for over 20 years, retiring as a Senior Tax Analyst. Her tap dancing resumed as a senior, taking lessons from teachers Tracey Varga, Carol Loeser, Annette Crumpton, Becky McCrary, Crystal Cammack, and Tina Leak. She has performed at many venues around town, such as City Stage, the Scottish Rites Temple, the USS NC Battleship, and has performed 15 times at Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts for the Arts Sensation Benefit with Company “T”.

Sandy remains very active! She has traveled to over 25 countries, takes line-dance classes twice weekly, and frequently performs with "Beaches & Boots" at festivals & Pleasure Island events. She plays tennis and pickleball, golfs with the Echo Ladies, skis with the Cape Fear Ski Club, takes Osher Lifelong Learning classes at UNCW, and relaxes with a glass of red wine.

Her favorite Hi-Stepper memory is hearing about their gold-medal victory at the State Silver Arts Competition and spending time with the ladies in Raleigh.
