Christy DeFrance

Dayton, Ohio
Company Member since January 2020

Christy began taking dance lessons at age 4 and continued through high school. She was part of her studio’s senior dance group, and her favorite tap dance routine was “Working on the Chain-Gang,” which they performed while actually chained together. As a teenager, she loved all the music of the 80s, especially Journey, Debbie Gibson, and Whitney Houston.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from West Virginia University and spent thirteen years teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades while raising her son, Josh, as a single mother. She also took on a part-time dance-teaching job at Dance Unlimited studio in Frederick, Maryland. After earning her master’s degree in School Counseling from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College | Liberal Arts College), she transitioned into elementary school counseling, serving the same school for 17 years. In 2018, she was honored as the Frederick County Public School Elementary School Counselor of the Year, an honor she greatly cherishes.

After 30 years in education, she moved to Wilmington in 2019 to be closer to her aging parents. Being near the beach was a nice bonus. She is a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization and of her women’s circle at church, whose mission is Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. She enjoys spending time with her father, scrapbooking, cruising on 80s cruise ships once a year, visiting her son Josh and his family in Maryland, and, most recently, becoming a Gigi to her adorable grandson, Dylan.

Upon joining Pine Valley Methodist Church, she met Annette Crumpton, the founder and teacher of the Hi-Steppers. After her first class, Anne thought Christy was a perfect fit for the troupe, and she has enjoyed being part of the group ever since. As a Hi-Stepper, Christy has won four gold medals at the North Carolina Senior Games and the Silver Arts Follies, both at the local and state levels, in 2022 and 2025. Her smile and zest for performing light up every stage and classroom.
